POWTECH 2019: Many sectors on the move

Powder and bulk solids are on the move: POWTECH 2019, which takes place at Exhibition Centre Nuremberg from 9 to 11 April, has plenty to offer visitors on the subject of mechanical processing technology. In six exhibition halls and through presentations, live demonstrations, guided tours and a special show, representatives of the powder and bulk solids industry will benefit from a complete package of useful practical knowledge. Parallel to POWTECH, the prestigious international congress for particle technology – PARTEC – will be held on the theme “Particles for a better life”. For the first time, the event will also feature an interactive knowledge-sharing area. At the new Networking Campus, young researchers, start-ups and developers will provide insights into the markets and technologies of the future.

In April, POWTECH, the leading international trade fair for powder and bulk solids, will bring together 823 exhibitors from 35 countries at Exhibition Centre Nuremberg to showcase their new products and best practices. In six exhibition halls, trade visitors from the bulk solids community will get to see machines live in action and can then discuss their development directly at the exhibitors’ stands. Whether designed for mixing, size reduction, agglomerating or separating, these systems and machines are crucial to the production processes of a great many sectors. “As far as the current mega-trends in the industry are concerned, like additive manufacturing or energy storage, for example, mechanical processing technology is an absolutely indispensable element,” says Beate Fischer, Director of POWTECH. “And it is precisely these application scenarios that POWTECH will be looking at.” Other trending topics include continuous manufacturing, modular plant design and naturally, the digitisation of production processes.

Be part of the conversation, establish contacts and enhance your knowledge

The Networking Campus think tank, which opens its doors as a communication hub for the first time and offers start-ups, major players, industry representatives and researchers the opportunity to discuss the technologies and markets of the future, is sure to be a genuine visitor drawcard. At its heart is an open presentation stage, where participants can contribute to an interactive programme. In a nutshell: join in and brainstorm instead of just listening. Short presentations, workshops and research poster sessions are all designed to focus on the future of modern bulk solid and particle technology. The topics covered will include the following:

  • Energy storage and energy converters
  • The closed-loop economy
  • Additive manufacturing
  • Digitalisation / digital transformation in the bulk solids segment
  • International markets
  • Virtual, augmented and mixed reality: opportunities and limitations in bulk solids operations

“The Networking Campus allows us to make the connection between process engineering and the disruptive future technologies that are becoming more and more prevalent in our daily lives and in industry,” says Fischer. The programme is complemented by a jobs board and the ProcessNet Café hosted by Dechema and the VDI-GVC. At the Recruiting Day on the Thursday, job-seekers can network with various companies, listen to their corporate pitches and learn what they have to offer prospective candidates. The adjacent interview corners can be used for initial conversations about new job opportunities.

Forums with packed programme of presentations

The Expert Forum in Hall 2 provides the platform for presentations focusing on food and chemicals. On all three days of the fair, there is a non-stop programme of talks on topics like conveying and dosing of powder and bulk solids, compressed air supply or process optimisation in bulk solids handling. Experts from the food industry will provide insights into Food Economy 4.0, food safety, and the pneumatic conveying of powder and bulk goods. The same hall also accommodates the special show “Dust recognises boundaries – free trade doesn’t” organised by the VDMA Group Air Purification and Drying Technology. It will show the options available for limiting dust using innovative filtering and separation systems that are often digitally supported.

Hall 3 houses the Pharma.Manufacturing.Excellence Forum. This pharmaceutical forum brings together functional excipients and modern equipment – the key to process efficiency and optimal dosage forms. The presentations cover the following main topics:

  • Tabletting
  • Coating / granulation / cleaning
  • Continuous manufacturing

The pharmaceutical forum is coordinated by the APV (International Association for Pharmaceutical Technology). Directly adjacent to the forum, suppliers of pharmaceutical excipients will for the first time also provide a fitting complement to the range on display at POWTECH for pharmaceutical experts. Participants in the guided tours for PROCESS ENGINEERING on the first and third days of the event can find out about the best components for designing and operating pharmaceutical processing facilities.

PARTEC Congress with high-calibre keynote speakers

As one of the world's leading congresses for particle technology, PARTEC gathers the professional community in Nuremberg every three years. “Our congress theme ‘Particles for a better life’ underscores this key role played by particle research,” says Professor Stefan Heinrich, Chairman of PARTEC 2019. “In 2019, alongside traditional fields of application, we will also be focusing strongly on cutting-edge technologies e.g. from the life sciences, energy and environmental technology or additive manufacturing, and will explore how particle technology can help drive these applications.” Six high-calibre speakers are set to provide inspiration at PARTEC with the latest findings from their disciplines. The speakers cover a wide range of topics and touch on areas of application like additive manufacturing or CO2 reduction. Congress delegates can look forward to speakers from the USA, UK, Australia and Germany, for example.

More safety in production facilities

The issue of explosion protection will also receive good coverage. “As POWTECH we want to make manufacturers aware that serious accidents in production facilities can be avoided with reasonable time and effort,” explains Fischer. The event therefore includes daily live demonstrations outdoors – including spectacular flame effects and bangs – and guided tours on this subject. In addition, there will be presentations on explosion protection in both the Networking Campus and Expert Forum on all three days of the fair. The topics presented are intended to provide insights into new German and international developments in standardisation, research and technology.
