Jamming transition in granular binary mixtures
The packing of binary mixtures made of spherical grains is a well known problem in mathematics and granular physics. While the packing fraction, which depends on both mass fractions and aspect ratio, has been highly studied, the compaction dynamics of mixtures remains poorly investigated. In our work, we measured compaction dynamics of various mixtures with different mass fractions of small beads and size ratios. We observed a diverging behaviour of the typical time of compaction depending on the size ratio close to the percolation threshold of small particles in the voids left by the large ones.
