AUTOMATIC EXTERNAL POLE MAGNET FOR FEED AND BULK GOODS
The automatic external pole magnet, recently developed by Goudsmit Magnetics from Waalre, is suitable for processing large capacities of feed and bulk goods. The magnet can be used for intake in ship unloading installations and serves to protect the machinery. Moulds, grinding and mixing equipment can be damaged by undesired metal particles. The external pole magnet is intended for coarse separation and separates parts larger than 2 mm. Magnetic bars  are suitable for the separation of finer metal particles. Fully automatic cleaning is integrated into the process system and takes place at the push of a button, without the intervention of an operator. The low built-in height of 500 mm makes the system easy to build into existing installations.

Free fall line

Two powerful capturing magnets are mounted on the outside of the completely smooth casing and, depending on the version, separate coarse or very fine iron particles from various material streams. The outer core magnet is fitted with Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) magnets for mounting in free-fall lines. An advantage of this outer-core assembly is that no bridging or clogging of the material can take place on the inside. Since the valve box is fully integrated in the design, the installation height remains limited.

Application

Application of such magnets is in ship unloading installations, at intake, in filling lines or for loading silos. A pneumatic controller ensures cleaning of the magnet. This is started via a 24V-DC signal and then runs fully automatically.  The external pole magnet is available in various versions up to an inlet/outlet of 300x1000 mm. The automatically cleanable ‘Easy Clean flow’ magnet from Goudsmit removes metal particles and weakly magnetic stainless steel particles from powders as fine as 30 µm in the food, chemical, ceramic and plastic industries. The Easy Clean flow magnet is suitable for large product flows and distinguishes itself by the very high magnetic flux density of over 12,000 gauss at the contact surface of the bars. These bars come into direct contact with the product and have a deeply penetrating magnetic field that effectively makes powders and granulates metal-free at high flow rates. The magnet is dustproof to an overpressure of 0.5 bar and has a simple electro-pneumatic controller. The user-friendly cleaning requires 6 bar air and 24 VDC start signals.

High separation yield
The thick, Ø50 mm magnetic bars provide a very high separation yield, have a deep holding field and a high flux density. This ensures that even grade 316 stainless steel particles are captured. To make sure that all particles touch the bars, a deflector is fitted. The large space between the bars results in a significant increase in capacity of the passage, which is particularly beneficial when it comes to poorly flowing powders.

Automatic cleaning
Cleaning takes place during a production stop. The product chute must be depressurised.
The pneumatic magnetic bars simplify the cleaning process. The guide takes the magnetic bars outside the product channel, after which the magnets in the bars are blown outwards. A plate then retains the captured metal particles, after which they fall into a collection tray. Sensors detect the position of the magnets. After cleaning, the magnets return to their original position and the product flow can be restarted. With the help of a connection box, it is possible to connect and control the magnet via the central control room. A control box with PLC is optional.

Redesign
The modified design is dustproof towards the outside. At the top, a cover plate with gasket ensures that no product can escape to the outside. The side of the magnet has a standard terminal box which simplifies the connection of sensors and cables. The newly developed series of magnetic drum separators especially for the intake of foodstuffs. These magnets remove ferrous particles and weakly magnetic particles  as small  as 0,03 mm from free-falling granular products in the said industries. The ever-increasing demands on magnetic force and material certifications have led to this modified design. The drum magnet, which is made entirely of stainless steel, has an EC1935/2004 certified seal and a magnetic force that varies optionally from 1,800 to 8,000 gauss. Magnetic drum separators prevent metal contamination of end products, as well as unnecessary damage to, for example, mixing or grinding machines. They are suitable for product flows with a lot of magnetic contamination.

The advantage of a magnetic drum separator is that the metal separation can take place in a continuous process and that this system can process large capacities. The product flow does not have to be stopped to clean the magnet; the new version has ample inspection options. The magnet makes direct contact with the product, attracts the magnetic particles and carries them to the bottom of the drum. Here the particles drop off and are collected and/or carried away.

DESIGN

The magnetic drum separator has a hygienically finished housing; there are no points where product can stagnate and the whole is smoothly finished and non-stick. This unit contains a complete neodymium magnet system and removes ferrous particles from 0,03 mm from raw materials with a maximum particle size of 50 mm. For the removal of small, slightly magnetic particles such as Type 304 stainless steel, we advise placing a vibratory feeder for the supply of materials. Due to the continuous cleaning, magnetic drum separators are very suitable for product flows with heavy magnetic particle contamination. You can use them for dry powders and granulates in free-fall pipelines, or after a vibratory feeder in belt conveyors. The magnet is available in various sizes. The EHEDG magnetic filter recently introduced by Goudsmit Magnetics is specially designed for the food industry. The filter is constructed of Neodymium magnets that provide more effective separation of very small ferrous particles as small as 15µm, weakly magnetic particles and even iron dust from sticky substances such as coffee, cocoa, pastes, powders and fruit juices.  This hygienic filter is suitable for CIP systems: the magnet can be magnetically operated, without the need to open the filter housing for cleaning. The magnet has a maximum flux density of 11,300 gauss at the bar and removes the specified particles from both liquid and powdered products. The entire system is made of grade 316 stainless steel, is smoothly finished (Ra≤0.4ųm) and is EHEDG certified.

CIP CLEANING
Cleaning of the magnet occurs automatically. When production is stopped the magnet can be 'blown' out of the product flow so the captured ferritic particles fall off the magnet. Cleaning can take place during the CIP process. A separate CIP cleaning cycle both flushes the captured ferro particles as well as the rinse. This prevents  the captured particles from entering the product again elsewhere in the process.  After this extra cleaning the complete CIP process can take place. The housing is constructed so that no product remains behind after cleaning (see animation on YouTube). The magnetic filter is used in tubes and/or pipelines in the food industry, where it performs deferrization of products conveyed under pressure. This way even the smallest iron particles can be filtered out of sticky substances (chocolate, pastes, powders or fruit juices), while these particles are normally carried off again by the raw material flow. Installation of a metal detector does not solve the ferro problem, because it is not able to detect the smaller metal particles. The hygienic magnetic filter is available in five standard dimensions ( Ø 50 - 125 mm).

EHEDG
Recently, Goudsmit has become the first magnet supplier to be admitted to the European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group. The EHEDG is a consortium of  installation suppliers, companies in the food industry, research laboratories and national public health bodies that aim at the highest standards of food safety. EHEDG sets standards for avoiding contamination or the growth of damaging micro-organisms, cleaning and decontamination capacity, and the use of materials and surface finish. It tests the product designs in the field of cleaning, sterilization and bacteriological impermeability. The range of magnetic filters that Goudsmit has been manufacturing for several years has recently been expanded with a modular, double-wall chocolate filter. The magnetic filter produced according to EHEDG guidelines is composed of Neodymium magnets that ensure effective separation of very small iron particles from 30μm, weakly magnetic particles and even iron dust from sticky substances such as chocolate. In the new design, the housing is not welded but made of one piece -RVS 316-. The new design prevents the heating water from entering the product channel. This water flows through the outer wall of the filter and keeps the chocolate liquid. In the fully modular design, a standard filter vessel of choice can be an ISO or a DIN pipe. This makes the filter easy to integrate into existing installations and also suitable for all couplings. The system fully meets the highest possible requirements within the food industry, such as HACCP and EHEDG.

Modular design
An advantage of the modular design is the ability to easily apply the desired options. For example, an extra powerful magnetic core that increases the magnetic value to 11,000 gauss.  Cleaning can easily take place semi-automatically with the help of a tool. The optional “Lock out, Tag out” or LoTo safety system ensures that the magnet will only return to production if the magnet is properly replaced after cleaning. A detection sensor to be applied as desired continuously checks whether a magnetic field is present in the product channel.
