Mass spectrometers are proven and very popular instruments for laboratory analyses, since up to 30 substances can be detected simultaneously from one sample, very quickly, very robustly and in very low concentrations. These measuring characteristics are very much in demand in process, environmental and medical technology, but mass spectrometers are currently only used by qualified personnel due to their complex operation and therefore only for special applications, but are then essential analytical tools. Mass spectrometric measurements must be adapted to the respective application and are often a component of complex coupled methods, especially for the analysis of liquid samples. Pure mass spectrometric measurement has the advantage of providing data in real time and is usually only performed from the gas phase. Especially in the market segments mentioned above, real-time measurements, especially from liquids, are necessary.
With the Fraunhofer innovation and a new approach to automation, the founding project Variolytics will for the first time be able to offer a mass spectrometer (MS) that can measure simultaneously and in real time from the gas and liquid phase. Variolytics plans to offer a flexible measurement system that can be used by non-experts in new fields of application in a very user-friendly way due to automated routines. Sample preparation is no longer necessary for measurements directly from liquids, nor is specialized personnel required. Using remote access, Variolytics experts can support the customer with measurement tasks in the form of a service if necessary, and measurement protocols can be developed in specialized laboratories and made available to the user.
