The WALS-demonstrator can be used to determine particle characteristics during the production of nanoparticles. To that end, different laser-optical measurement techniques are combined. Laser-induced incandescence (LII) allows the determination of primary particle size and volume concentration, while wide-angle light scattering (WALS) can be used to measure the size and shape of particle clusters. With the help of an ellipsoidal mirror, high-resolution scattering data can be obtained, from which particle size distributions can be determined. The user receives the results on aerosol characteristics in quasi real-time.

The Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics (LTT), founded in 1989, is part of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and employs about 40 staff members. The research focus is the investigation and improvement of processes in energy and process engineering. A key issue is the optimization of combustion processes, spanning from an improved understanding of model flames to experimental studies of complex technical systems (e.g. combustion engines). A closely related field is the study of particle formation, on the one hand to reduce soot emission of practical combustion systems, on the other hand in the synthesis of nanoparticles with defined properties.
