The ATEX directives give clear rules as regards bursting discs: the venting efficiency must be capable of proof, the discs must open at precisely the correct time, and above all they must not present any risk for their immediate environment.

FIKE® Deutschland has again carried out a thorough investigation of these points. Computer models are only suitable to a limited extent, if truly reliable data regarding the behaviour of bursting discs under explosion conditions is to be generated. Therefore new series of tests are constantly being run at FIKE® at the company's own test facility. The research of the engineers in the field paid off: round bursting discs of certain sizes tend to fragment during different types of explosions. This is particularly the case when they are installed on relief ducts, in pipelines and with high K values.

The damage which threatens for people and equipment in such cases is obvious. This is why the development department of the expert for explosion protection reacted promptly. The new HI (High Integrity) series, which FIKE® has been selling since the first of January 2005, definitively excludes the risk of the fragmentation of round bursting discs.

The developers integrated an effective additional component. The "shoulder plate" led to amazing results during the tests: it goes without saying that the bursting element remained connected to the bursting disc in all cases. In addition, there were a whole series of explosions which resulted in cleanly "folded" discs. The HI series bursting discs are certified for pressure relief in gas and dust explosions and are available in different versions and sizes. This innovation is naturally compatible with existing plant and equipment.
