Nitrogen makes up 78% of the air and has the property of displacing oxygen. Nitrogen is therefore used, in particular, for applications in which oxygen is not wanted. In cryogenic liquid form, nitrogen is a powerful refrigerant.
Typical areas of application are the protection of production processes, e.g. for printed circuit boards, the cooling and frosting of foodstuffs, the inertisation of pipelines or tanks and cryogenic applications in industry.
For industrial applications, high-purity carbon dioxide is normally used, produced as a by-product in the chemicals industry or recovered from underground sources. It can be used as a liquid, as a gas or in solid form as dry ice.
Carbon dioxide plays an important role in the cooling and frosting of foodstuffs and in the treatment of water. In drinks it provides a refreshing sparkle, and carbon dioxide is also needed for innovative processes like dry ice blasting.
