VDMA Drying Technology Department
Drying technology is an established part of almost every industry. The sectors' manufacturers and plant engineering companies are organized within the Drying Technology department. With its 56 member companies, this group acts as the central representation of interests for all those companies within VDMA which manufacture drying components, dryers and drying systems. This diverse segment of the Air Handling Technology Association is made up of small to medium-sized companies and business units of large enterprises. The department’s ongoing task is to support the entrepreneurial aims of this worldwide industry in questions of economics, technology and research. The Drying Technology department contributes to its member companies' success through targeted activities such as the provision of studies, market data and public relations.
Drying technology is used in large-scale industrial plants, lab equipment and even special system components that are needed as integral part of an entire process. The technological implementation of the drying process stage is increasingly integrated into the entire system of a plant, with product-related services being provided by the companies more and more often. German companies are the technology leaders in many areas and internationally renowned as such, especially in plant engineering.
Consideration of life cycle costs is therefore gaining a stronger influence in business decisions. Economic feasibility calculations with consideration of quality, energy efficiency and operational reliability serve as a basis of decision-making in selecting alternative process and machinery-related solutions. The supplier directory set up by the specialist department may be of assistance in making investment decisions.
The customer sectors for drying technology range from waste management and building materials manufacturing to the chemical, pharmaceutical, food, textile and coating industry, all the way to the printing, paper, wood and pulp industry. This leads to numerous interfaces to other associations and departments within VDMA, e.g. areas such as surface treatment, building materials machinery, wood and food processing equipment, process engineering and air pollution control.
The innovative power of German manufacturers, which is based on the highly-specific requirements of drying technology, as well as their technological competence often make them the sole suppliers of specific dryers and the world market leader in this field. Dryers can often be found in the portfolios of manufacturers who also offer machines and plants from the entire process chain, for instance in lacquering plants, from spray booths to dryers to exhaust air purification.
