THERMOCUT SYSTEM FOR ENHANCED
PROCESSING OF HIGH VISCOSITY MELTS
Sandvik has added to its chemical handling ranges with the introduction of the ThermoCut® system, an innovative tool that enhances the performance of the company’s market-leading Rotoform® system to deliver perfectly formed pastilles when solidifying high viscosity products.
The Sandvik Rotoform system provides the default granulation solution for chemical processors around the world. The process, first introduced as long ago as the late 1970s for the pastillation of liquid sulphur, has set the standards against which other solidification systems are judged.
Its groundbreaking performance – delivering an end product of consistent shape and size – has seen the process adopted as the solidification solution of choice for hundreds of products across the chemical industry.
The required properties of a granule will vary from one product to another of course, but in general terms, successful processing will deliver granules that are:
- Consistently sized (diameters from 0.8-36 mm)
- Dust free
- Easy to dispense
The Rotoform system delivers on all counts. More than 2,000 have been installed to date, and this gives Sandvik unparalleled expertise in different product types, flow conditions, and the many other parameters of this process.
The company continues to develop and enhance the process, introducing new models and innovations that enable customers to gain further market advantage through improved product quality and productivity. One of the most recent examples of this is ThermoCut, a highly efficient new tool that brings significant improvements to the processing of high viscosity products.
THERMOCUT FOR PERFECT PASTILLES WITH NO ANGEL HAIR
A common issue faced by processors handling advanced, high viscosity products is the formation of threads, commonly known as ‘angel hair’. These threads or tails, created when the melt is deposited on the steel belt cooler by the Rotoform, can result in a less than perfect pastille shape with more dust pollution and increased cleaning requirements. The development of our ThermoCut® system overcomes this to deliver a significantly better quality end product.
The system works by blasting a narrow jet of high-pressure, heated air at the precise place where the droplets are formed between the Rotoform and steel belt. This powerful blade of hot air cuts the threads before they have chance to develop further.
As well as delivering a more stable production process with better quality pastilles, the use of ThermoCut equipment also results in a substantial reduction in the need to clean the machine.
