One main component of the EPACO system is the CEREx Detector. This detector recognises an increase in pressure long before explosion pressure is reached. The detector differentiates between increases in pressure which indicate explosions and normal process overpressures. At the same time, the CEREx detector recognises static pressures and therefore also reacts to explosions which progress very slowly. The FIKE® CEREx detector works with a patented algorithm combining speed (1ms reaction time) with precision and stability. Processing of the detector signals for functions such as triggering actuation of the extinguishing medium containers, switching off the plant or displaying process disturbances is carried out by the EPC system control, which can even be used in areas at risk from explosive atmospheres.
Development of an increase in explosion pressure is detected 200 times faster than the flame progresses or increases in size. Following detection and triggering actuation of the extinguishing system, the fireball only fills a small part of the protected tank or vessel. This allows a degree of protection to be achieved which seemed impossible up to quite a short time ago.
For the operator, proof of the efficiency of the suppression and relief system, and above all, certification as a device and as a protection system by a notified body in accordance with 94/9/EC are extremely important. All FIKE® solutions are not only certified as device, but also as a protective system. Above and beyond the tests which are essential for certification, trials have been carried out at international test facilities such as FSA, DMT, Ciba Geigy and of course at the FIKE® test area.
