"SeedCheck " is a program that has been developed especially for a customer in southern Germany. The issue here is a quick, optical measuring method for the quantity of seed dressings (grain).
Background: Seeds like wheat or barley is treated before sowing with special chemical agents to protect the grain better against pests, bacteria or fungi. This process is also called 'seed dressing' or just 'treatment'. The treatment allocation in grain can be uneven- also an increase of the application rate does not result in the expected success in many cases. It is not always possible to coat the grain evenly. The treatment liquid usually has a color, in our case it was dark red.
The treatment degree is normally determined colorimetrically or by HPLC analysis. Both measurements are time consuming, expensive, and are only performed in the laboratory and not directly at the allocation-machine. In this type of measurement, the agent in the examined sample gets detached with a solvent from the grain surface, and then the color intensity of this solution is measured. By comparison with a known solution, the treatment degree can be determined.
This process is relatively complex. In the present case we was asked whether there is a way to speed up the processes, to be able to make a quicker statement with the aid of digital image processing.
Description of the seed treatment check
The system consists of a CCD scanner, a sample container and the appropriate software.
With this solution it is possible to analyze a sample in a few seconds, as a result of the measurement the color value, the resulting treatment degree and the homogeneity is available.
For each seed a reference file is created. Orders are traceable and can be printed, as known from the OKS Software.
