FiltEST - The Filter Element Simulation Toolbox
Filtering devices are required in a wide spectrum of very different fields of application. Each of these is characterized by specific requirements on the performance of the filter element. In practically all applications, there is need for a long filter lifetime and efficiency: The cleaning performance and dirt holding capacity should be as high as possible while the pressure loss should remain rather low for as long as possible.
Designing filter elements that meet the requirements is a challenging task, since filtration is by nature a complex process. A purely empirical approach to optimize the products by testing real-world prototypes on the test stand can become very time-consuming and costly.
The long-time expertise of the Fraunhofer ITWM in modelling and simulation of filtration process has flown into the development of the Filter Element Simulation Toolbox (FiltEST). The software enables the product designers to compute in advance for a given design the key performance factors efficiency, lifetime and evolution of pressure loss due to the loading.
The core of this software toolbox is the numerical simulation of the flow through the filter element’s housing and the media, the transport of the dirt and its deposition in the media. On top of that, standard tests (single-pass and multi-pass tests) can be simulated on the "virtual test stand".
Since CAD geometries can be imported and the results are written in common formats for visualization and spreadsheet processing, a substantial part of the product design can be done in the computer. Therefore, FiltEST can accelerate the developmental period significantly.
Due to its modular structure, FiltEST can be adapted to individual requirements.
