The Institute for Particle Technology strives for excellence in research and teaching in selected fields of mechanical process engineering and particle technology in particular. Thereby, the particle-particle interactions and the control of interfaces play a key role and are specially dealt with. Our research activities are focused on six key areas investigated in our research groups.

The research fields are interconnected by shared experimental methods such as the measurement of nanomechanical properties of particles and particle collectives as well as common numerical methods such as the discrete element and the finite element methods. Furthermore, the knowledge is combined for the development of novel products and applications, e. g. for the fabrication of porous layers of nanoparticles: Firstly, the nanoparticles need to be synthesized and dispersed in a suitable medium. Then, they need to be processed into thin films, which after curing are to be characterized in terms of their nanomechanical and functional properties. Numerical methods for granular matter can be applied to explain the properties. Our research groups are extensively collaborating to achieve a detailed understanding of the individual process steps, thereby leading to optimum solutions for novel applications.
