The OHLRO Hartschaum GmbH had its origins in 1966. At that time, the technically experienced company founder Willi Ohlbrecht was working for VEG Gartenbau in Berlin. There he built up a Styrofoam production facility with moldings for nurseries were required to support frames for flower pots and seed boxes. Since that time the Styrofoam production began in the eastern part of Berlin, which became today's OHLRO Hartschaum GmbH after the reunification.
The company 

name was derived from the family names of the two company founders Willi Ohlbrecht and Volker Rohden. Volker Rohden left the company after a few years, while Willi Ohlbrecht built up the company into a successful family business. The management is now in hands of his children Jens Ohlbrecht and Kathrin Koal.
