The behavior of fine powders and particles during handling, storage, and transport is influenced by a wide variety of physical properties. Unwanted phenomena such as clogging of products in big bags and bridging and poor flow in hoppers are often related to (altered) products properties. Products which are somehow sensitive for e.g. moisture, consolidation, cohesion, attrition will behave differently as compared to their more inert counterparts. Predicting the powder behavior is however not an easy task. Delft Solids Solutions uses a combination of different tests rigs to mimic industrial behavior of powders and solids allowing an adequate description of their anticipated flow and transport behavior. Such studies can be used in hopper and silo design but also for a comparative investigation on poor and optimal product properties and of course in product formulation. Delft Solids Solutions is a contract research organisation founded in 2002. Our core activities are focused on a better understanding of processes in which powders and solids are used. A more detailed description of materials properties on the micro-level leads to an improved understanding of the behaviour and control of solids on the macro-level. To this end, we employ a variety of experimental set-ups in our laboratory and test areas.
A broad range of methodologies and techniques including method development and consulting is available. Correlating more fundamental parameters such as particle size, porosity, and surface area with bulk solids behavior – flowability, attrition, shear, dustiness of powders – enables to establish firm links with theory and practice. Areas we are active in include, but are not limited to: pharmaceutical materials, medical devices, building materials, catalysts, filler materials, pigments, food and food additives, and handling of bulk solids in general.
