Closing report: POWTECH / TechnoPharm 2010 and WCPT6 - The world in Nürnberg
  • Growth: almost 16,500 visitors from 74 countries
  • Quality: exhibitors praise high professional competence of visitors
This year’s organization of the three highly international events – POWTECH, TechnoPharm and the World Congress on Particle Technology (WCPT6) – in parallel made the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg Europe’s top meeting-place for process technicians, process engineers, production managers and scientists for four days. The almost 1,000 exhibitors presented their products and innovations to the over16,490* visitors (2008: 15,117) from key industries like chemicals, pharmaceuticals and food. At WCPT6, some 800 participants from more than 30 countries discussed the latest findings from all areas of particle technology daily during the exhibition.

680* exhibitors from 27 countries at POWTECH and 276* exhibitors from 13countries at TechnoPharm once again made the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg the meeting-place for manufacturers of process technologies, plant and apparatusat the end of April 2010. The number of exhibitors was therefore slightly less than at the previous event eighteen months ago (POWTECH/TechnoPharm 2008: 1,009).“But especially at times like the present, which are very hard for the machinery and plant engineering sector, we are proud that the exhibitors are defying the crisis and almost as many as usual have come to Nürnberg,” says Claudia Hauser-Vollrath, Exhibition Manager of POWTECH/TechnoPharm at NürnbergMesse. The leading exhibiting nations after Germany were Switzerland, Italy and Great Britain at POWTECH, and Switzerland, Italy and Austria at TechnoPharm.

Particularly the increased number of visitors at the exhibition duo in 2010 was very encouraging. Not only the number of visitors grew – to 16,490
(2008: 15,117, including 30 % international) – but also the percentage share – 32 per cent – of international visitors and the number of countries from which the process technicians, process engineers, production managers and scientists came to Nürnberg. Visitors from 74 countries (2008: 70 countries) streamed into the halls and onto the exhibitors’ stands to gather information on new products and innovations during the three days of the exhibition. Besides Germany, the list of visiting countries was headed by Austria, Switzerland, Italy, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands. Visitors also travelled to Nürnberg from Japan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Australia and Nigeria. In general, not only the number of visitors was a very positive aspect, but above all their high professional qualifications.

This was also a reason why the mood in the halls at POWTECH and TechnoPharm 2010 was exceptionally good. The exhibitors at the exhibition duo also emphasized the visitors’ increasing willingness to invest. “The feedback from the exhibitors reflects the growing optimism that the time of budget freezes and restraint is past,” sums up Claus Rättich, Member of the Management Board of NürnbergMesse. “We are therefore very pleased that the course of the exhibitions underlines the present good development of the industry. After all, some nine per cent more visitors than in 2008 came to source information, for example, about the latest innovations from the machinery and plant manufacturers. So Nürnberg also sends a distinctly positive signal for the relevant industries.”

The results of a survey by an independent market research institute also indicate this trend: When asked about the present economic situation, 72 per cent of the POWTECH exhibitors and 61per cent of the TechnoPharm exhibitors assume a slight to strong rising trend. The exhibitors’ estimates of follow-up business after the exhibitions are also in the high two-figure ranges: 84per cent of the TechnoPharm exhibitors and 93per cent of the POWTECH exhibitors expect noticeable follow-up business from the contacts and inquiries made during the events.Almost every exhibitor was satisfied with the professional qualifications of the visitors (POWTECH 98%,
TechnoPharm 96%).

The two exhibitions in 2010 were also geared to innovative processes for process optimization and continuous improvement of safety standards in areas such as explosion protection. Protection against dust explosions and the presentation of new technologies for detecting and avoiding these risks have already been an integral part of the high-tech exhibitions for many years, but a lot of exhibitors attached particularly high priority to explosion protection this year. For example, they showed new ways of detecting and preventing the risk of spontaneous combustion of dusts in good time or minimizing the risk of electrostatic charging during the transportation of powders. In line with the vital importance of this issue, the programme offered at POWTECH and TechnoPharm 2010 included special seminars, congresses, guided tours, live explosions and panel discussions.

POWTECH 2010
Especially the unusually varied applications of mechanical processing technologies make fundamental aspects like safety and sustainability extremely interesting for experts from all industries all over the world. So every third POWTECH exhibitor also came from abroad this year. Apart from Germany (462), the following countries were traditionally strongly represented: Switzerland (43), Italy (32) and Great Britain (24). The POWTECH exhibitors came from altogether 27 countries. The visitors found a new or improved product on three out of four stands (71 %) at POWTECH. The exhibitors received visitors on their stands from the following industries: chemicals (75 %), machinery and plant engineering (64 %), food / food manufacturers / animal feed manufacturers (63 %) and pharmaceuticals
(52 %; multiple answers were possible). Nine out of ten exhibitors were satisfied with the overall success of their presence at the exhibition in Nürnberg and 87 per cent have already decided to exhibit again in eighteen months’ time.

The visitors at POWTECH said they were mainly interested in the following product groups: "plant engineering and processing components" (65 %), "basic processing technologies for powder and bulk solids" (49 %), "instrumentation" (25 %), "safety and environmental technology" (22 %), "particle analysis and characterization" (21 %; multiple answers were possible). 94 per cent of the visitors are involved in procurement decisions in their company, and 23 per cent even decisively influence these decisions.

TechnoPharm 2010
make individual production stages even more efficient, and the effective coupling of individual stages for optimizing the whole process also played a major role. 20per cent of the exhibitors also came from abroad this year. Apart from Germany (221), the following countries were traditionally strongly represented: Switzerland (19), Italy (12) and Austria (7). The TechnoPharm exhibitors came from altogether 13countries. The top 3 industries for visitors on the stands of TechnoPharm exhibitors were pharmaceuticals, chemicals and food.

Three out of four exhibitors showed a new product or innovation in Nürnberg, and 81 per cent rated their overall success at the exhibition as satisfactory to very good. 71 per cent had already decided by the end of the 2010 exhibition: We’ll be there again in 2011!

The visitors at TechnoPharm 2010came mainly for the following reasons: information about new products, exchanging views/information, training/expanding knowledge, and general market orientation. For the visitors interviewed, the most interesting product groups were "production" (59%), "laboratory and development" (33%), "filling technology" (32%), "packaging technology" (25%), "cleaning, hygiene and environment monitoring"
(21%; multiple answers were possible). In addition to the exhibition activities, almost every second visitor (43%) saw the special show on “Pharmaceutical Packaging Security” in hall 5 and was pleased with the valuable information obtained.

WCPT6
The latest findings from all fields of particle technology were combined and discussed at this unique 4-day world congress held in English. Some 800 scientists from more than 30 countries came to Nürnberg for WCPT6 to source information and exchange views on 13 subjects ranging from “Particle Characterization” to “Food / Pharma / Life Science Applications”.

Dr. Ir. Gabrie Meesters, Congress Chairman, summed up the congress positively: “The sixth World Congress on Particle Technology (WCPT6) was a great event with some 800 participants. The around 750 lectures and posters provided more than sufficient opportunities to exchange specialist knowledge and ideas. The papers covered subjects ranging from the whole field of particle technology and large particulate systems to the latest nanoparticle technologies. Production, properties and health aspects were dealt with in detail, also the use of the technologies in the development of new and optimized products. The combination of WCPT6 and POWTECH / TechnoPharm 2010 proved to be very successful, as it enabled representatives from science and manufacturers of particulate systems to meet in Nürnberg. This combination of exhibition and congress will probably be found again in future events, so naturally at the PARTEC Congress 2013 as well.”
